Single Protein Diets (SPD).

A single protein diet for dogs is exactly what it sounds like: a food that contains only one source of animal protein, such as chicken, lamb, beef, turkey, or fish. All of the meat-based ingredients in the diet come from that one protein source.

When Is a Single Protein Diet Most Useful?

  • Dogs with chronic diarrhoea or loose stools (e.g., colitis)

  • Dogs with itchy skin, paw licking, or ear infections

  • Dogs on an elimination diet guided by a vet

  • Senior dogs with declining digestion

  • Dogs recovering from illness or stress

Working out food allergies can be difficult - starting with novel proteins can help identify issues with past diets

If you want to go a step further then you can do a Novel Protein (a protein your pup hasn't eaten before or very rarely). When trying to eliminate known sensitivities this is a good way to go because it is new [this can be part of an "elimination" diet where you eliminate a common protein and replace it with a new one].

Kangaroo or other novel meats can be a useful way of replacing existing proteins.

Why Choose a Single Protein Diet?

1. Easier Digestion

When a dog eats only one protein type, their digestive system has less work to do. This can help reduce issues like loose stools, gas, and vomiting.

2. Helps Identify Food Allergies

If a dog is itchy, has ear infections, or ongoing gut problems, protein intolerance is often the cause. A single protein diet makes it much easier to pinpoint which protein is triggering the reaction.

3. Supports Sensitive and Senior Dogs

Dogs with ageing digestive systems or chronic gut inflammation often do better on simpler, more predictable diets.

4. Consistency for Gut Health

Feeding the same protein consistently can support a more stable gut microbiome, which plays a big role in overall health and immunity.

What to Look For on the Label

Not all foods marketed as “single protein” truly are. Check that:

  • There is only one animal protein listed

  • No hidden proteins (like chicken fat or beef broth)

  • Treats and chews match the same protein

Cook your own

Single Protein Diet (SPD) foods can be hard to find or expensive and although some brands add good things like taurine, tapioca, psyllium husks, etc, you can make food that is more appetising. Advantages of cooking your own food are:

  • Cheaper and better quality food

  • You know exactly what is in it

  • You can tailor to your pup's tastes

  • You can do your own add-ins

  • You can freeze and serve later

Summary

A single protein diet isn’t necessarily forever for every dog, but it can be a powerful tool for improving digestion, comfort, and quality of life—especially for dogs with sensitivities. If your dog has ongoing health issues, it’s always best to introduce dietary changes in consultation with your favourite vet.
