Why Homemade Dog Food Is Worth Trying

If you don't have the time then buying food is a necessity but making your dog’s food at home is a game-changer. You get to control every ingredient, avoid fillers and preservatives, and tailor meals to your dog’s specific needs. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to bond with your furry mate.

Here’s why homemade dog food ideas rock:

  • Fresh ingredients mean better nutrition.

  • You can avoid allergens or ingredients your dog doesn’t tolerate.

  • It’s often more affordable than premium commercial dog food.

  • You can customize meals for puppies, seniors, or dogs with special diets.

Simple Homemade Dog Food Ideas You Can Make Today

Ready to get cooking? Here are some easy recipes that your dog will adore. These meals are balanced, tasty, and made with ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

1. Chicken, Sweet Potato, and Peas

  • 2 chicken breasts, chopped

  • 1 large sweet potato, peeled and diced

  • 1 cup frozen peas

  • 2 cups water or low-sodium chicken broth

Add everything to your pressure cooker and cook on high pressure for 15 minutes. Let it cool, then mash or chop to your dog’s preferred texture.

2. Beef, Carrots, and Brown Rice

  • 500g lean ground beef

  • 1 cup brown rice, rinsed

  • 2 carrots, diced

  • 3 cups water

Cook on high pressure for 20 minutes. This hearty meal is packed with protein and fibre.

3. Turkey, Pumpkin, and Green Beans

  • 500g ground turkey

  • 1 cup pumpkin puree (no added sugar)

  • 1 cup chopped green beans

  • 2 cups water

Pressure cook for 15 minutes. Pumpkin is great for digestion, and green beans add fibre and vitamins.

These recipes are a great starting point. Feel free to swap veggies or proteins based on what your dog likes and what’s in season. Don't forget the offals/organs have the minerals dogs need too.

What should top 3 ingredients be in dog food?

When you’re making your own dog food, it’s important to focus on the right ingredients. The top three should always be:

  1. Protein - This is the foundation of your dog’s diet. Chicken, beef, turkey, lamb, or fish are excellent choices. Protein supports muscle health and energy.

  2. Vegetables - Veggies like carrots, peas, green beans, and pumpkin provide essential vitamins, minerals, and fibre. They help with digestion and overall health.

  3. Carbohydrates - Brown rice, sweet potatoes, and oats are great sources of energy. They also add bulk to meals and keep your dog feeling full.

Avoid fillers like corn, wheat, and soy, which can cause allergies or digestive issues. Always aim for whole, natural ingredients that you’d be happy to eat yourself!

Tips for Using a Pressure Cooker to Make Dog Food

If you haven’t used a pressure cooker before, don’t worry. It’s super easy and saves you loads of time. Here are some tips to get the best results:

  • Use fresh, high-quality ingredients for the best nutrition.

  • Cut ingredients into similar sizes so they cook evenly.

  • Add enough water or broth to prevent burning and create steam.

  • Don’t overfill your pressure cooker - look for that max line on the side of the pan.

  • After cooking, let the pressure release naturally for tender results.

  • Cool the food completely before serving to your dog.

  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze in portions.

Pressure cookers lock in nutrients and flavours, making your dog’s meals both tasty and healthy. Plus, you can batch cook and freeze meals for busy weeks!

How to Transition Your Dog to Homemade Food Safely

Switching your dog to homemade meals is exciting, but it’s important to do it gradually. Sudden changes can upset their tummy. Here’s a simple plan:

  1. Start by mixing 25% homemade food with 75% current food for 3 days.

  2. Increase homemade food to 50% for the next 3 days.

  3. Move to 75% homemade food for another 3 days.

  4. Finally, switch to 100% homemade food.

But there is no reason why you need to switch 100% as well. A mix can be a good solution. Dry food in the mornings and cooked in the afternoon. There is no one solution.

Watch your dog for any signs of digestive upset like vomiting or diarrhoea. If you notice anything unusual, slow down the transition or chat with your vet. Better still check out some of the great pet nutritionist's recommendations.

Also, homemade meals might need supplements like calcium or fish oil. It’s a good idea to discuss your dog’s diet with a vet or pet nutritionist to make sure all their nutritional needs are met.

Making Mealtime Special Every Day

Feeding your dog homemade food is more than just nutrition - it’s a great way to show your love and care. Whether you’re cooking a quick chicken and veggie mix or a hearty beef and rice meal, your dog will feel the difference.

Remember, every dog is unique; generally we have found that most pups love a variety to their meals. Keep an eye on how your dog responds to new foods and adjust as needed. And don’t forget to enjoy the process! Cooking for your dog can be a joyful part of your routine.

So, grab your pressure cooker, pick up some fresh ingredients, and start creating delicious meals your dog will adore. Here’s to happy, healthy pups and many more shared meals ahead!
